Why five parcels cost more than one box of the same weight
Customers routinely assume that shipping is priced per kilogram, so five one-kilogram parcels should cost the same as one five-kilogram box. They do not, and the gap is usually large enough to pay for a month of groceries.
The first half kilogram carries the fixed costs
Every shipment triggers the same work regardless of size: a customs declaration, a label, a manifest entry, a scan at each handover, a slot on an aircraft, a stop on a delivery van.
Carriers recover that in the opening rate band. On our zone 2 lane the first 0.5 kg costs $12.40 and each additional 0.5 kg costs $4.60 — roughly a third. That ratio is typical across the industry.
The arithmetic
Five separate 1 kg parcels each pay one opening band plus one additional band: 5 × ($12.40 + $4.60) = $85.00.
One consolidated 5 kg box pays one opening band plus nine additional bands: $12.40 + (9 × $4.60) = $53.80.
Same goods, same distance, same weight. The difference is $31.20, and it grows with every extra parcel.
The saving comes from paying the fixed cost once instead of five times, not from any discount we negotiate.
Where it stops being worth it
Consolidation has limits. A box that grows bulky enough to cross into volumetric billing can cost more than splitting the shipment, and very heavy boxes hit handling surcharges.
This is why the box builder shows a marginal cost against every parcel you have not selected. When adding one more item costs more than shipping it alone would, the number tells you.
The storage window exists for this reason
Consolidation only works if your purchases arrive close enough together to travel as one. Thirty days of free storage — forty-five on Gold, sixty on Platinum — is what makes that practical across a sale season.
The trap is leaving items past the window and paying storage that erodes the saving. Your locker counts down the days remaining on every parcel.
